Robotaxis and Suburbia

Podcast cover

Stratechery

Suburban living is experiencing a resurgence as the convenience gap between urban centers and residential areas narrows, driven by advancements in e-commerce and autonomous transportation. Amazon’s delivery infrastructure has largely neutralized the logistical advantages of city life, while technologies like Full Self-Driving (FSD) and emerging Robotaxi networks provide reliable mobility that offsets the isolation once associated with the suburbs. Although Uber successfully scaled into a profitable behemoth by leveraging human drivers, its future remains uncertain as purpose-built autonomous fleets—such as those from Waymo or Tesla’s integrated CyberCab and Optimus robot ecosystem—promise a more efficient, safer, and potentially superior transportation experience. This shift suggests that the 2010s peak of urbanism may be the last of its kind in the United States, as the relative benefits of living in a large home with a yard increasingly outweigh the traditional perks of central city density.
