On today’s episode, I speak with Kristi McVee, the founder of Child Abuse Prevention + Education Australia (CAPE), about child safety and abuse prevention education. Drawing from her experience working in the police force, as well as a child abuse detective, Kristi unpacks the importance of preventative measures in childhood abuse and the role that educators play in this.

Kristi and I discuss:

🌸 Myths around childhood abuse and the prevalence of abuse in Australia.

🌸 The critical role of prevention.

🌸 Grooming and signs to look out for.

🌸 The importance of a protective behaviour curriculum that is developmentally appropriate.

🌸 Child protective behaviours such as tricky people and tricky behaviours, safe and unsafe touch, safety networks, consent, early warning signs and saying no.

Kristi McVee has spent over 14 years fighting child sexual abuse from the front lines and now utilises her experiences as a police officer and child abuse detective to teach all she knows about child abuse prevention to parents, caregivers, educators and the community.
