AEE: What is Lookism and What Can We Do About It?

Podcast cover

All Ears English Podcast

Lookism, the systemic discrimination or unfair judgment of individuals based on physical appearance, significantly influences professional and social outcomes. This bias often manifests as a "beauty premium," where attractive individuals receive preferential treatment in hiring and promotions, compounded by the "halo effect"—the cognitive tendency to associate physical attractiveness with positive character traits like intelligence and confidence. Digital culture and social media further intensify these pressures by promoting narrow, constant beauty standards. Because lookism lacks the legal protections afforded to other forms of discrimination, it remains largely unaddressed in policy and practice. Engaging in productive dialogue about this phenomenon requires a collaborative approach, such as referencing external media to invite personal reflection on one's own biases rather than adopting an authoritative stance.
