AEE 2701: Us Neither or We Neither? Would you Believe… Neither!

Podcast cover

All Ears English Podcast

Natural English conversation relies on specific negative agreement structures that often deviate from strict grammatical expectations. While "us neither" is technically permissible, it sounds unnatural to native speakers; instead, "we don't either" or "neither do we" serve as the standard, fluent alternatives for group agreement. For individual responses, "me neither" remains the most common and appropriate choice, despite the frequent, albeit less accurate, use of "me either" in casual speech. These phrases function as concise, standalone markers of shared sentiment and should not be extended with additional clauses. Mastering these chunks allows speakers to build rapport by quickly confirming commonalities, whether regarding lifestyle choices, future plans, or personal preferences, without the cognitive load of complex translation or second-guessing.
