The global macroeconomic environment presents significant challenges for India, characterized by rising advanced economy bond yields, a strengthening US dollar, and volatile oil prices currently exceeding $100 per barrel. Pranjul Bhandari of HSBC Bank highlights that these external pressures, combined with a domestic inflation spike projected to surpass 6% by year-end, necessitate proactive monetary tightening. While India’s economic growth remains resilient, driven largely by robust high-tech exports and new trade agreements like the recent pact with the UK, the Reserve Bank of India faces pressure to act. To maintain institutional credibility and address inflationary risks, the central bank should concurrently drain excess liquidity and implement interest rate hikes rather than delaying action until December.
