Two twin brothers who wanted to be Hollywood writers bootstrapped PDQ to $20 million in revenue and 15,000 customers on weekly YouTube videos and Reddit threads. No sales team. Then Dan Cook walked in the door.

Six years later PDQ is north of $100 million in revenue, profitably, with four tuck-in acquisitions and outside capital layered in along the way. Before PDQ, Dan built the revenue organization at Lucid Software from literally nothing — no sales team, no CRM, 30 engineers and him — and helped scale it past $150 million in ARR.

In this conversation with LeanScale co-founder Anthony Enrico, Dan takes apart the hardest question in product-led growth: how do you add a sales motion to a machine that already works without breaking the thing that made it work? The answer runs through cannibalization tests, a control group nobody's allowed to touch, a seller-to-RevOps ratio he studied firsthand, a CRM that started life as a Google spreadsheet, and an M&A playbook worked backwards from the easiest step.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

The one question to answer before you hire a single rep into a PLG motion: is sales accretive, or just cannibalizing?

ABOUT THE GUEST

Dan Cook is President and CEO of PDQ, the device management and IT automation company behind PDQ Connect, PDQ Deploy, PDQ Inventory and PDQ Detect. Dan began his career at Piper Jaffray, a middle-market investment bank in San Francisco, then spent three years at Polaris Venture Partners in Boston sourcing growth-stage technology investments — a job he describes as being an SDR selling money. After an MBA from Harvard Business School he joined Lucid Software, where he built the revenue organization from scratch and served as Chief Revenue Officer as the company scaled past $150 million in ARR and opened offices in Amsterdam and Melbourne. He joined PDQ in 2020, when the bootstrapped, founder-run business was doing roughly $20 million in revenue with 15,000 customers. Under his leadership PDQ has grown past $100 million in revenue profitably, completed four tuck-in acquisitions, added new products, and taken on a significant investment from Berkshire Partners.
