Cults function as high-control groups that systematically strip individuals of critical thinking and personal autonomy through the BITE model—behavior, information, thought, and emotional control. While often confused with intense fandoms or religions, true cults demand absolute obedience, isolate members from external support systems, and frequently center around a charismatic leader or rigid, exclusionary ideology. Vulnerability to recruitment spikes during major life transitions, where individuals seek belonging and protection, often leading them to trade their agency for a sense of community. Once inside, the sunk cost fallacy and intense fear of the outside world create significant barriers to exit. Modern manifestations, including political movements and wellness groups, leverage digital platforms to exploit these same psychological needs, proving that susceptibility to manipulation is a universal human trait rather than a sign of intellectual deficiency.
