Fixing the PR Bottleneck — Matt Pocock, AIHero

Podcast cover

AI Engineer

The PR bottleneck in modern software development stems from the rapid, AI-driven acceleration of code production, which often leads to an accumulation of low-quality "slop." To maintain code integrity, organizations must implement a layered defense system consisting of automated checks, automated reviews, and targeted human intervention. Automated checks, while efficient, often suffer from tautological or structure-sensitive tests; these can be mitigated by designing deep modules that hide complex implementation details. Rather than overloading implementer agents with coding standards, developers should utilize dedicated review agents to enforce quality. Furthermore, human review should be reserved for high-risk "one-way door" changes, while a retrospective "Retro" skill can continuously refine the system by analyzing past sessions to improve future agent performance, tool economy, and coding standards.
