The seafood we waste

Podcast cover

Round Table China

Seafood production faces significant challenges with food loss and waste, as an estimated 15% to 35% of global aquatic catch never reaches consumers. This loss occurs throughout the supply chain, beginning with the discarding of undersized or unwanted fish at sea and continuing through inefficient processing, transportation, and retail handling. In China, the annual seasonal fishing moratorium plays a vital role in marine ecosystem recovery, leading to higher quality catches. To mitigate post-harvest waste, the industry is increasingly adopting advanced cold chain logistics, including flash freezing and rapid refrigerated transport. Furthermore, the development of inland aquaculture, such as salmon farming in Xinjiang, effectively bypasses the logistical hurdles of long-distance distribution, significantly reducing the potential for spoilage and waste while ensuring a consistent supply to landlocked regions.
