
Fintech companies are increasingly pursuing U.S. banking licenses to gain direct access to the financial system, moving beyond partnerships with existing banks. Securing a charter provides critical advantages, including FDIC deposit insurance, access to the Federal Reserve’s discount window, and a Fed master account for payment processing. While regulators are currently more receptive to new applicants to foster industry competition, the approval process remains rigorous and compliance-heavy. Regulatory advisor Michelle Alt notes that applicants must demonstrate robust operational standards to satisfy agencies like the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Industry players such as Mercury are currently navigating this complex application gauntlet, while others like Square have already successfully transitioned to becoming full-fledged banks, allowing them to offer broader financial services directly to consumers and businesses.
