The Fall of the USSR, Pt I

The rapid dissolution of the Soviet Union between 1990 and 1992 stemmed from Mikhail Gorbachev’s attempts to revitalize a stagnant planned economy through radical reforms. Perestroika introduced limited free-market mechanisms and foreign investment, while Glasnost promoted transparency, inadvertently exposing deep-seated social ills and state crimes that shattered public faith in the Soviet experiment. The abandonment of the Brezhnev Doctrine removed the threat of military intervention, emboldening satellite states like Poland to pursue democratic elections and independence. This shift triggered a domino effect across the Eastern Bloc, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the eventual secession of key republics, including Ukraine. By dismantling the Communist Party’s centralized control, Gorbachev unintentionally accelerated the collapse of the superpower, transforming a stable, authoritarian regime into a fragmented collection of independent nations.
