Selects: How Narcolepsy Works

Podcast cover

Stuff You Should Know

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and the inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles. The condition manifests in two primary forms: Type 1, which includes cataplexy—a sudden, emotion-triggered loss of muscle tone—and Type 2. Research identifies the root cause as an autoimmune attack on the hypothalamus, specifically destroying 90-95% of the neurons responsible for producing hypocretin, a peptide essential for maintaining wakefulness. Triggers for this immune response often include infections like streptococcus or, historically, specific vaccines. While currently incurable, symptoms are managed through stimulants like modafinil, antidepressants, and strict sleep hygiene. The disorder is frequently misdiagnosed due to its overlap with comorbidities like depression, yet proper diagnosis and management allow individuals to lead stable lives despite the inherent risks of sudden sleep attacks and involuntary muscle control loss.
