14. It’s Not a Time Management Problem. It’s an Attention Management Problem.
Workplace Therapy with Dr. Abby Medcalf
Effective productivity relies on attention management rather than time management, as the human brain is not evolved for constant digital stimulation and multitasking. Modern work environments, characterized by notifications and fragmented tasks, induce cognitive overload and "attention residue," which significantly diminish mental performance and trigger burnout. Procrastination is often a symptom of an exhausted attention system rather than a lack of discipline. To reclaim focus, prioritize sustained attention through intentional habits: eliminate early-morning phone usage, batch communications, complete tasks fully before switching, and utilize a structured schedule to minimize decision fatigue. By protecting cognitive bandwidth and treating attention as a finite, valuable resource, individuals can transition from a reactive state to a proactive, grounded approach to their daily responsibilities.
