While closed-source AI labs currently subsidize high inference costs to lock developers into their ecosystems, this strategy is unsustainable. Businesses are increasingly shifting toward open-weights models, which offer superior cost-efficiency and performance when paired with robust AI-native infrastructure. By adopting open-weights models, companies can bypass the price gouging of proprietary APIs and standardize their development workflows. To maintain a competitive edge, American AI labs should prioritize releasing open-weights models rather than strictly guarding proprietary research. This shift mirrors the Open Compute Project’s success, where commoditizing infrastructure through shared standards ultimately drove innovation and reduced costs across the entire industry, proving that market adoption favors accessible, cost-effective solutions over closed, expensive alternatives.
