Big Lettuce meets Small Intestine

Podcast cover

Planet Money

The industrialization of the lettuce supply chain has transformed leafy greens into a year-round, value-added commodity, yet this evolution has introduced significant food safety risks. The development of breathable bag technology allowed for centralized, large-scale processing, which inadvertently created a multiplier effect for foodborne pathogens; contamination at a single source now frequently impacts consumers across multiple states. While the 2010 Food Safety Modernization Act granted the FDA authority to regulate farms, persistent outbreaks of *Cyclospora* and other bacteria highlight ongoing systemic failures. Food safety expert Jim Gorny and former agricultural executive Joe Pezzini note that these challenges stem from limited regulatory resources, infrequent farm inspections, and the scientific complexity of tracking elusive pathogens. Consequently, the reliance on industrial-scale production continues to balance the convenience of consistent, pre-packaged produce against the inherent, low-probability risks of widespread contamination.
