The identity of an AI agent resides in its log—an append-only history of every input, output, tool call, and state transition—rather than in the model or runtime environment. Much like a video game save file preserves a character’s progress regardless of the hardware, a durable log allows agents to be resumed, scaled, and migrated across different infrastructures without losing state. Treating the log as the primary system primitive enables structural reliability, simplifies debugging, and facilitates complex operations like branching and multi-user collaboration. Current agent architectures often treat logs as secondary data, leading to fragility and vendor lock-in. By prioritizing the log as the source of truth, developers can ensure agent continuity, maintain ownership of sensitive workflows, and build systems that are resilient to the inevitable failures of individual workers or model providers.
