Reddit's model for a better internet | Steve Huffman

Podcast cover

TED Talks Daily

The internet, originally designed for human connection, has increasingly become a performance-based "stage" that fosters loneliness and artificiality. Social media platforms prioritize engagement through algorithms and rage-bait, often stripping away the human element. In contrast, a "city" model—exemplified by Reddit’s diverse, self-governing communities—allows for authentic interaction, neighborly support, and shared values. While AI offers efficiency, it lacks the lived experience and moral depth found in human-to-human advice. By shifting from a model that rewards viral performance to one that encourages participation and community-led governance, the internet can reclaim its original purpose. This transition requires intentional design, moving away from sanitized, manicured content toward spaces where individuals can be themselves, share tough love, and foster genuine belonging in an increasingly automated digital landscape.
