Sunday Pick: The Data Center Next Door with Dr. Jacoby Wilson | from TED Tech
TED Talks Daily
Data centers are increasingly functioning as "digital sacrifice zones," where massive infrastructure for AI and cloud computing imposes heavy environmental and social costs on surrounding neighborhoods. These facilities consume millions of gallons of water and constant electricity, often driving up utility bills and degrading air quality in vulnerable, predominantly minority communities. Dr. Jacoby Wilson, an environmental health scientist at the University of Maryland, argues that the industry exploits historical disenfranchisement through opaque planning processes and misleading promises of job creation. While these projects are often presented as economic boons, they frequently offer minimal local benefits while forcing residents to internalize externalities like pollution and resource depletion. To combat this, communities must demand greater transparency, push for local moratoriums, and implement strict zoning ordinances that hold planning commissions accountable to the residents they serve.
