Babysitting the Machine: Glean's Rebecca Hinds on the Hidden Human Labor of AI at Work

Podcast cover

"The Cognitive Revolution" | AI Builders, Researchers, and Live Player Analysis

The "Work AI Index 2026" report reveals a significant disconnect between individual AI productivity gains and overall organizational performance. While 87% of workers report using AI and saving an average of 13 hours per week, only 13% of organizations show improved performance. This gap stems from "botsitting"—the unglamorous, untracked labor of feeding context, debugging, and cleaning up AI outputs—which consumes nearly half of the time supposedly saved. Furthermore, 69% of employees admit to "botshitting," or shipping AI-generated work they cannot explain or defend. Rebecca Hinds, head of the Work AI Institute at Glean, argues that organizations must move beyond top-down mandates and instead foster a culture that aligns AI tools with meaningful shared missions, rewards effective collaboration, and leverages an enterprise context graph to bridge the gap between individual output and business outcomes.
