#84: Van Gogh (deel 2: de kunstenaar)

Podcast cover

Een Beetje Nederlands

Vincent van Gogh’s artistic journey between 1880 and 1890 reflects a profound transformation from a struggling, self-taught painter to a visionary master of color. Supported by his brother Theo, who provided both financial stability and emotional encouragement, Van Gogh moved from the somber, realistic tones of *The Potato Eaters* to the vibrant, impressionist-inspired palette characterized by his signature use of chrome yellow. His time in Paris and Arles proved highly productive, though his mental health deteriorated, manifesting in severe psychotic episodes and the infamous ear-cutting incident. Despite his immense output and growing recognition toward the end of his life, his struggle with mental illness—likely exacerbated by exhaustion and addiction—ultimately led to his suicide in Auvers-sur-Oise. His legacy remains defined by this intense dedication to his craft, which he famously described as costing him half his sanity.
