Periodization: Macrocycles, Mesocycles, and Microcycles | CSCS Chapter 21

Podcast cover

Dr. Jacob Goodin

Periodization organizes athletic training into hierarchical cycles—macrocycles, mesocycles, and microcycles—to optimize performance while managing fatigue. Macrocycles typically span a year or up to four years, while mesocycles function as multi-week blocks, and microcycles generally align with seven-day schedules. Training progresses through four distinct phases: the preparatory period for building base conditioning, the first transition for strength and power development, the competition period for maintaining performance, and the second transition for active rest and recovery. By systematically shifting training foci from high-volume, low-intensity work to low-volume, high-intensity efforts, athletes avoid overtraining and ensure peak readiness for key events. This framework allows for the strategic sequencing of hypertrophy, strength, and power blocks, ensuring that each phase potentiates the next to facilitate long-term athletic development and injury prevention.
