Attacks on Russian Data Centers: It's Not About Bots || Peter Zeihan

Podcast cover

Zeihan on Geopolitics

Ukrainian attacks on Russian data centers represent a strategic shift targeting Russia's critical digital infrastructure rather than its disinformation capabilities. While Russian "hate bots" remain largely unaffected due to low processing requirements, the destruction of seven out of Russia's twelve major data centers threatens time-sensitive services like credit card processing, cellular connectivity, and logistics. Russia’s digital landscape is uniquely vulnerable because the country skipped several developmental stages, moving directly from 1960s-era technology to modern systems after 2008. Consequently, Russia lacks the "analog" fallback options—such as faxes or landlines—available to Western nations. With only 200 data centers compared to 20,000 in the United States and a severe shortage of skilled IT labor, these targeted strikes risk forcing the Russian economy into a catastrophic regression to early industrial communication methods, potentially triggering a deep economic depression.
