Binance and the Biggest Crypto Heist Ever

Podcast cover

The Journal.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, recently suffered an unprecedented $6.3 billion heist, marking one of the largest bank robberies in history. Hackers gained access by planting malware on an employee’s computer during a fraudulent job interview, allowing them to siphon funds in just 20 minutes. While Binance managed to freeze $3 billion of the stolen assets, the remaining $3.3 billion was rapidly laundered through thousands of wallets. U.S. authorities have linked the breach to a North Korean state-sponsored cybercrime unit, a group already suspected of funding missile programs through crypto theft. This incident exposes critical vulnerabilities in digital asset security, severely damaging investor confidence and stalling efforts to normalize cryptocurrency as a mainstream financial tool, especially given the lack of regulatory safeguards comparable to traditional banking.
