Jonathan + Death of an Artist

The third season of *Death of an Artist* investigates the joint suicide of married artists Michael and Petra Mathers, a couple who lived in relative isolation in Astoria, Oregon. Journalists Alice Gregory and Leon Neyfakh utilize a unique, non-narrated format, relying exclusively on archival tape and interviews to reconstruct the couple’s final days. The series probes the mystery behind their decision to end their lives while healthy and in love, examining how their intense, exclusionary bond left friends feeling betrayed and confused by the lack of warning. By avoiding traditional narration, the production forces listeners to navigate the same ambiguity and emotional complexity that the couple’s inner circle experienced upon receiving the news. This approach highlights the inherent tension between private intimacy and the expectations of those outside the relationship.
