BlackRock's Rieder on Global Bonds, AI

Podcast cover

Bloomberg Television

Fixed income markets currently offer a rare investment environment where high yields are achievable without relying on long-term Treasuries. Rick Rieder, BlackRock’s Chief Investment Officer of Global Fixed Income, argues that the traditional 60-40 portfolio is archaic because investors can now construct 7% yielding, single-A rated portfolios by staying at the front of the yield curve. While government risk in regions like France remains volatile due to fiscal challenges, significant opportunities exist in securitized assets and bespoke financing for technology infrastructure. The massive wave of high-grade bond sales from "hyperscalers" to fund AI data centers and GPU procurement provides a compelling alternative to agency mortgages and high-yield markets. Unlike the internet bubble, these AI-driven companies generate substantial cash flow and revenue, making their debt and equity attractive as the cost of financing equilibrates across capital structures.
