Challenger chemistry: One start-up’s bullish take on sodium-ion battery storage

Podcast cover

Energy Evolution

Sodium-ion batteries, specifically those utilizing sodium iron phosphate pyrophosphate (NFPP) cathodes, are emerging as a viable, safer, and more cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion systems in the energy storage sector. Landon Mossburg, CEO and co-founder of Peak Energy, highlights that sodium-ion technology eliminates critical mineral dependencies and allows for passive cooling, which enhances safety and simplifies permitting for data centers and grid-scale applications. While lithium-ion currently dominates with 94% market share, sodium-ion is poised to capture significant growth by 2030. Because sodium-ion cells can be manufactured on existing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) production lines, the industry can scale rapidly without massive capital reinvestment. Despite current supply chain bottlenecks, the inherent stability and performance benefits of sodium-ion position it to become a dominant force in the evolving energy transition as the industry successfully navigates the transition from pilot projects to full-scale bankability.
