No device could prove our theory of gravity wrong... until now

Podcast cover

Veritasium

General relativity predicts that time flows faster at higher altitudes, a phenomenon known as time dilation. Scientists are testing this theory by comparing high-precision ytterbium atomic clocks located at different elevations, such as one in a laboratory and another on a mountain. These clocks achieve unprecedented accuracy by cooling atoms to microkelvin temperatures and using optical frequency combs to measure oscillations—518 trillion per second—that exceed the capabilities of traditional electronics. The experiment requires sophisticated laser technology to maintain signal stability across 80 kilometers of turbulent atmosphere. By measuring these minute discrepancies in time, researchers aim to determine if gravity adheres to quantum mechanical rules or if Einstein’s equations require fundamental corrections. This research serves as a critical step toward future space-based tests of physics at the quantum scale.
