AI is fundamentally reshaping the cybersecurity landscape by accelerating the identification of vulnerabilities and the development of proof-of-concept (POC) exploits. While large language models excel at detecting logic flaws in open-source web applications, they struggle with closed-source firmware or complex reverse engineering tasks. Spencer McIntyre, Director of Exploit Development at VulnCheck, notes that while AI-generated POCs are increasing, many lack the functional utility required for real-world exploitation. Security teams must navigate the tension between leveraging AI for defensive research and managing the risks of proprietary model guardrails. As agentic workflows and automated fuzzing become more sophisticated, the speed of vulnerability discovery is forcing a shift in how organizations prioritize and patch systems, moving beyond static metrics like CVSS toward a deeper understanding of actual attacker utility and business impact.
