The transition from using AI for research to deploying agentic AI for automated purchasing represents a fundamental shift in consumer behavior and retail strategy. While consumers currently trust AI to synthesize product information, they remain hesitant to grant agents full autonomy over financial transactions without robust liability protections. Merchants must move beyond viewing AI as merely another distribution channel and instead treat AI agents as a distinct customer segment. This requires developing strategies to inform and persuade these agents—such as presenting data in tables or leveraging influential content—to ensure brand visibility.
