Episode 535: Manager externalities and should I fight stupid processes

Podcast cover

Soft Skills Engineering

Workplace friction often stems from "externalities," where managers create messes or impose complex processes that shift the burden onto individual contributors. Addressing these issues requires approaching leadership with curiosity rather than confrontation, framing feedback around the impact on team velocity and shared goals. When new leadership imposes unwanted architectural or process changes, immediate resistance often triggers ego-driven conflict. Instead, adopting a neutral stance—or "uncivil obedience"—allows for an objective assessment of whether these changes are truly detrimental or simply different. Prioritizing team output over personal preference often proves more productive than fighting bureaucratic decisions that are ultimately beyond an individual's control. When managers remain unreceptive, focus on minimizing personal frustration and finding workarounds, as constant conflict rarely yields positive results and often damages professional relationships.
