Mathematics is undergoing a fundamental transition from an era of human-led "proof scarcity" to one of AI-driven "proof abundance." This shift threatens the traditional, romantic "heroic age" of the discipline, as the prioritization of speed and output by AI companies risks devaluing human understanding and disrupting essential pedagogical pipelines. While AI has achieved significant milestones, such as the "Quasi-Riemann Hypothesis," the lack of transparency and collaboration with the academic community creates a "strip mining" effect on research problems. Renowned mathematician Terry Tao argues that this misalignment of incentives poses long-term risks, particularly as AI systems are increasingly integrated into critical real-world infrastructure. To sustain the field, the mathematical community must evolve toward more collaborative, large-scale projects while asserting the necessity of human oversight to ensure that technological advancements bolster, rather than replace, deep mathematical insight.
