Continual learning in large language models requires balancing weight updates with parametric memory to avoid catastrophic forgetting and maintain general capabilities. While current frontier models rely heavily on KV cache searching, integrating knowledge directly into model weights remains a significant challenge due to the risk of overwriting previously learned information or degrading reasoning circuits. Research publishing faces a crisis of volume and noise, necessitating a shift toward more rigorous, interactive, and reproducible formats that transcend traditional static papers. Distillation, particularly on-policy self-distillation, offers a potentially more sample-efficient alternative to reinforcement learning for capability acquisition, though stability remains an obstacle. Ultimately, the field requires better tools to understand model behavior beyond generic benchmarks, as current evaluation methods fail to capture the nuanced, uncorrelated errors that distinguish different models.
