The Coin Belongs to Caesar, But Caeser Belongs to God
Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies
The biblical mandate to "render to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's" addresses the perennial tension between religious faith and state authority. This dilemma often collapses into either theocratic dominance or aggressive secularism, both of which stem from a faulty metaphysical view of God as a competing "supreme being" within the world. Instead, God functions as the creative ground of all reality—the source of existence itself. Because human beings are created in the image of God, they possess an inherent dignity that transcends political structures. While Caesar maintains legitimate authority over worldly affairs, that power is ultimately derived from and ordered toward God. Consequently, the state holds a distinct, independent role, yet it remains fundamentally subject to the divine order that sustains all finite reality.
