Why has gold got so expensive?

Podcast cover

6 Minute English

Gold remains a premier financial asset and "safe haven" because its value is independent of any specific government or economy. Unlike fiat currency, the supply of gold is finite and cannot be created "out of thin air" through alchemy or printing, which sustains its underlying value during periods of global instability. Recent geopolitical conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, alongside international trade tariffs, drove gold to record price peaks in early 2026 as central banks and investors sought stability. While the modern world becomes increasingly virtual and ethereal, the physical, dependable nature of gold appeals to a traditional desire for solid investments. Approximately 200,000 tonnes of gold have been mined to date, and despite price fluctuations, it continues to serve as a critical store of value in an uncertain global market.
