Sharp Tech with Ben Thompson
Apple’s new HomeView device and its accompanying marketing campaign represent a misaligned product strategy that fails to demonstrate clear utility or a cohesive vision for the smart home. The promotional commercial, widely criticized as stressful and dystopian, obscures potential use cases like kitchen recipe management or calendar synchronization. The device’s viability depends entirely on the effectiveness of Siri AI, yet Apple’s hesitant framing suggests a lack of confidence in its own artificial intelligence capabilities. While a centralized hub for home automation is theoretically valuable, the current hardware feels redundant compared to existing mobile devices and lacks the integration necessary to justify its premium price. Ultimately, Apple is pushing expensive, restrictive hardware into a market where power users already rely on more flexible, capable alternatives, leaving the product stranded in an uncanny valley of limited functionality and questionable necessity.
