The Science of Stress, Recovery & Adaptation

Podcast cover

CTS Ultrarunning Podcast

The principle of stress and recovery, or overload and adaptation, serves as the fundamental physiological mechanism behind all effective athletic training. By applying controlled stress, the body undergoes a disruption that, when followed by adequate recovery, triggers supercompensation—a state where the body adapts to exceed its previous baseline. Performance readiness is determined by the balance between fitness gains and fatigue accumulation, a relationship modeled by the fitness-fatigue equation. This law remains constant across all time scales, from the seconds between high-intensity intervals to the years required for long-term athletic development. Neglecting this balance leads to either overtraining syndrome and physical breakdown or, conversely, a lack of progress due to insufficient stimulus. Coaches add value by monitoring real-time physiological markers and subjective feedback to adjust recovery, ensuring the athlete consistently converts accumulated stress into meaningful performance gains.
