Sustainability & Safety of Large Satellite Constellations from Starlink Perspective Looking Forward
International Astronautical Federation
Scaling satellite constellations in low-Earth orbit requires a commitment to space safety, primarily through the transparent sharing of high-precision ephemeris data. Starlink maintains safety by operating at lower altitudes to ensure passive atmospheric decay and by performing frequent, automated collision avoidance maneuvers. Despite these efforts, the lack of universal data sharing among global satellite operators remains a significant risk. Future expansion, specifically the proposed "StarMind" constellation, aims to shift AI supercomputing infrastructure from Earth to space, utilizing solar power and radiative cooling. This transition necessitates even higher levels of satellite reliability, advanced proximity operations, and new end-of-life strategies, such as moving assets to heliocentric orbits. Achieving these ambitious goals depends on fostering a collaborative environment where all space actors prioritize communication and coordination to maintain a secure orbital environment for current and future operations.
