The Billionaire Tax, The Busted Federal Budget, and the Future of the American Experiment
Hoover Institution
U.S. fiscal policy faces an existential crisis as federal spending on entitlement programs and interest payments on the national debt continue to spiral out of control. With Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid operating on autopilot, these programs now consume half the federal budget, while interest payments have surpassed defense spending for the first time. Neither tax increases nor GDP growth can bridge the structural deficit, necessitating significant spending constraints. Furthermore, California’s proposed wealth tax on billionaires threatens to trigger capital flight, ultimately resulting in net revenue losses rather than gains. The persistent appeal of socialist policies among younger generations stems from a lack of historical perspective regarding the economic failures of such systems. Without fundamental reform to address these runaway expenditures, the nation risks a period of severe stagflation and long-term fiscal instability.
