Are GLP-1s Longevity Drugs? | Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair - S2, Ep. 10
David Sinclair
GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally developed for diabetes and obesity, are emerging as potential breakthrough longevity medicines. These drugs, including semaglutide, function by mimicking gut hormones to regulate blood sugar and appetite, but recent evidence suggests they also influence biological aging by activating pathways like AMPK and SIRT1. Studies in mice and humans indicate that these medications can slow the pace of biological aging, reduce inflammation, and improve mitochondrial function, with some data showing a 9% reduction in the rate of aging for certain patients. While these drugs are currently revolutionizing the treatment of obesity and related metabolic conditions, their potential to act as geroprotectors remains a subject of active research. As global access expands and production costs decrease, these therapies may eventually serve as foundational tools for extending human healthspan, provided that users maintain muscle mass and adhere to medical supervision.
