Texas has experienced explosive growth in grid-scale battery capacity, surging from 200 megawatts to over 16 gigawatts in just a few years. This rapid expansion has saturated the ancillary services market, forcing developers to pivot toward energy arbitrage, where revenue has plummeted from nearly $200 per installed kilowatt in 2023 to roughly $30 today. While this creates a challenging economic environment for current merchant projects, the industry anticipates a potential recovery driven by massive load growth from data centers and the retirement of aging thermal plants. Brandt Vermillion, U.S. market lead at MotoEnergy, highlights that while current market conditions are difficult, the cyclical nature of energy markets and the scale of incoming demand could restore volatility and profitability by 2029 or 2030, provided that behind-the-meter generation does not significantly offset the expected grid demand.
