Meta has pivoted its strategic vision from the Metaverse to MUSE, an AI-driven operating system designed to serve as a primary computing interface. This shift prioritizes AI agents over fully immersive virtual reality, supported by a hardware ecosystem ranging from audio-only smart glasses to lightweight VR headsets. Despite these innovations, the smartphone remains the dominant consumer device, entrenched by its role as a central hub for entertainment, communication, and personal memory storage. Apple’s ecosystem, particularly its control over user data and messaging, presents a formidable barrier to Meta’s efforts to decouple users from the smartphone. While Meta aims to establish its own hardware platform, the high compute costs and the difficulty of displacing established consumer habits suggest that achieving mass adoption for standalone AI agents will be a long-term, capital-intensive challenge.
