Why Your Hardware Prototype Is Not Ready For Production In China

Podcast cover

Hardware startups often arrive in Shenzhen with prototypes that are functionally sound but fundamentally unmanufacturable for mass production. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) requires specific technical considerations, such as adding draft angles to plastic shells for injection mold ejection and creating precise edges for ultrasonic welding. Beyond physical casing, optimizing a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for automated pick-and-place machines is essential to maintain production speed and reduce costs. A critical factor in commercial viability is the transition from expensive Western-sourced components to high-quality, local Chinese equivalents. One off-grid solar startup successfully reduced its bill of materials from $150 to just $10 by leveraging local engineering expertise and Taobao-sourced components. This dramatic cost reduction, combined with manufacturing-ready design adjustments, allowed the company to scale from a three-person team to a thirty-person award-winning enterprise.
