The Volkswagen Beetle originated as a central pillar of Adolf Hitler’s 1930s industrial policy, intended to provide mass-produced, affordable transportation to unite the German Volk. Despite the regime's ambitious goal of selling the car for 990 Reichsmarks, the project faced significant economic hurdles, as German manufacturers lacked the mass-production expertise perfected by Henry Ford in the United States. Ferdinand Porsche spearheaded the design, creating an iconic, aerodynamic vehicle that prioritized efficiency and low cost. However, the project ultimately devolved into a military-industrial disaster during World War II, as the factory shifted to producing military vehicles like the Kübelwagen using enslaved labor from concentration camps. This failed economic experiment highlights the limitations of state-mandated production and the brutal human cost behind the development of what would later become a global automotive icon.
