709. The Terror: The Execution of Marie Antoinette (Part 3)

Podcast cover

The Rest Is History

The French Revolution’s descent into the Reign of Terror centered on the systematic dehumanization and eventual execution of Marie Antoinette. Once a symbol of royal glamour and trendsetting fashion, the Queen became a scapegoat for France’s economic collapse and political instability. Revolutionary agitators like Jacques Hébert utilized pornographic, misogynistic propaganda to transform her into a monstrous figure, justifying her trial and subsequent execution in October 1793. Simultaneously, the revolutionary government sought to erase all traces of monarchy, desecrating the royal necropolis at Saint-Denis and imprisoning the young Dauphin, Louis XVII. His brutal confinement and eventual death at age ten mirrored the total destruction of the Ancien Régime’s mystique. These events illustrate how the revolution’s radicalization, fueled by paranoia and the need to eliminate potential royalist threats, permanently dismantled the foundations of the French monarchy.
