The Global Diesel Problem

Podcast cover

Morgan Stanley

Diesel serves as the essential fuel for the global industrial economy, powering everything from heavy transport and shipping to agricultural machinery due to its high energy density. Current geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East and Russia have removed approximately 1.5 million barrels per day from the seaborne market, creating extreme supply tightness. This scarcity has caused the "crack spread"—the price difference between crude oil and refined diesel—to spike to record levels near $100 per barrel. While high prices typically trigger demand destruction, current data remains inconclusive as consumers rely on tertiary inventories or absorb costs for this indispensable fuel. Furthermore, potential government-imposed export bans carry significant risks; restricting diesel exports could inadvertently force refineries to reduce overall output, potentially driving up the price of other refined products like gasoline.
