Are you setting up your newly promoted manager and their team for immediate success, or sending them into a gauntlet of strained relationships and a retreat to their old job?

A strong individual contributor may have the skills to do the work but little experience leading the people who do it. When they begin managing former peers and friends, they need new communication skills to give feedback, set expectations, and build morale. You can help them navigate those conversations before misunderstandings turn into conflict.

After listening, you’ll be equipped to:

Prepare your newly promoted manager for the shift from teammate to team leader.
Clarify their authority and coach them through changing relationships and accountability conversations.
Build their leadership skills through ongoing coaching and connections with trusted peers.

In this episode, you’ll find seven practical ways to help your new manager earn trust, strengthen teamwork, and address performance concerns with confidence, so press play and give them a stronger start.

Be sure to pay attention to:

03:47 – Prepare them before the promotion is announced.

Find out which relationships could become complicated and what concerns your future manager already has. That conversation can help them enter the role ready for its leadership challenges.

06:49 – Make expectations clear in both directions.

Use a simple four-part conversation to clarify what your newly promoted manager owns, what they need from you, and what happens when something goes wrong.

09:42 – Help them lead people who are still their friends.

Hear how a new team leader can support a friend while being clear about their management responsibilities. It’s a communication skill that can prevent confusion and protect trust.

13:24 – Coach them to address problems early.

If a former peer misses a commitment, your new manager may be tempted to wait. Help them prepare to give feedback before the rest of the team starts questioning whether expectations matter.

17:38 – Ask about the people side of leadership.

Bring more than projects and productivity metrics to your one-on-ones. The right questions can reveal conversations your manager is avoiding and show you where they need coaching.
