AI Doesn't Replace the Fundamentals: How Product Teams Actually Work at Anthropic & OpenAI
Product Pathways
Rapid product development in the AI era requires balancing extreme speed with foundational product principles like strategy, customer discovery, and quality control. While "bottoms-up" organizational structures allow companies like OpenAI to navigate uncharted technical territory, these practices are not universal solutions, particularly in highly regulated industries. AI-driven tools facilitate rapid prototyping and agent-based workflows, effectively shifting the role of product managers to "managers of agents." However, this transition increases cognitive load and risks overlooking critical user needs. Ultimately, AI does not resolve organizational dysfunctions; in environments with complex legacy architectures, speed gains remain limited by coordination and integration bottlenecks rather than coding velocity. Maintaining deep domain expertise and clear strategic focus remains essential, as relying solely on AI to automate workflows often leads to wasted effort on non-impactful tasks.
