Conversation with Ayar Labs CEO Mark Wade on Silicon Photonics, Co-Packaged Optics, and Next-Gen AI Infrastructure
The Circuit
Large-scale AI data centers face a critical revenue-scaling bottleneck caused by the performance limits of electrical interconnects in compute systems. Optical connectivity offers the only viable solution to overcome the bandwidth-distance trade-off, enabling the next generation of token throughput and reasoning model performance. Transitioning to optical requires integrating photonics into advanced CMOS nodes and complex multi-die packages, a process currently hindered by significant manufacturing and supply chain hurdles. IR Labs, led by CEO Mark Wade and VP Jesse Leiter, addresses these challenges by partnering with foundries like TSMC and major GPU providers to standardize optical engines within existing semiconductor manufacturing flows. While short-term development remains turbulent due to diverse form factors, the industry is moving toward a unified, high-volume production model by 2030, mirroring the integration trajectory of High Bandwidth Memory.
