In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Dave Ferguson, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Nuro. Dave reflects on Nuro’s first decade, what has kept him motivated through the AV industry’s ups and downs, and how Nuro’s co-CEO structure works in practice. We also discuss the differences between leading the technical and business sides of an AV company and how Dave’s role has evolved over time.

Dave explains what makes Nuro’s approach to autonomy unique and takes us inside the company’s partnership with Lucid and Uber. We explore the vehicle’s hardware stack, how Nuro plans to differentiate as AV hardware becomes cheaper, and the latest milestones on the path toward fully driverless testing/deployment. Dave also shares how the Nuro Driver can generalize across different vehicle platforms and draws on Nuro’s previous driverless deployments to explain Nuro’s driverless capabilities.

The conversation also examines whether the AV industry is moving toward full vertical integration or greater specialization, how building the software and hardware stacks compares, and how Nuro’s partnership with Uber could expand over time. Finally, Dave shares Nuro’s broader goals and what comes next for the company.
