Can Your Beliefs Actually Change How You Age? | Shawn Achor

Podcast cover

The Midlife Chrysalis

Belief systems act as primary drivers of life outcomes, especially during midlife transitions. Research indicates that shifting mindsets regarding aging from inevitable decline to potential for growth significantly improves cognitive and physical health. This growth mindset functions similarly to the placebo effect, where positive expectations manifest tangible benefits, while the nocebo effect—internalizing negative societal stereotypes—can accelerate physical and mental deterioration. Intentionally practicing "neuroscaping," or curating a storehouse of positive, meaningful memories, allows individuals to reframe their personal narratives and maintain a sense of purpose. Ultimately, happiness and social connection serve as precursors to success, rather than its byproduct. By choosing to believe that behavior matters and that one is not alone, individuals can navigate challenges like career shifts or health crises with greater resilience and agency.
